Dental Implants are an excellent way to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth. They have been successfully used in dentistry for decades and are now a highly predictable and widely accepted treatment option.
A dental implant is best described as “a replacement for the root of a missing tooth”. Just like a natural tooth root, dental implants are placed into the jawbone. Once the implant is installed, it takes a period of time for the surrounding jawbone to firmly fuse to the implant (a process called ‘osseointegration’). Once this has occurred, the implant can then be used to support a restoration.
In the case of multiple missing teeth, several implants may be required.
Implant placement is a precise procedure that requires a high level of skill, knowledge and experience. Dr Scott Park has been trained in the placement of dental implants and is able to provide this treatment. For complex cases, we will refer our patients to a specialist periodontist for the procedure, whilst remaining closely involved in the treatment planning process.
Single Tooth Dental Implants
In the case of a single tooth replacement, a connector called an abutment is attached to the implant, followed by the placement of a crown. The whole restoration is called an ‘implant-supported crown’. In many cases, this type of treatment is the ideal way to replace a single missing tooth as it closely mimics the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth. These restorations are permanently attached, easy to keep clean and, unlike a bridge or denture, they don’t involve teeth adjacent to the gap.
Multiple Teeth Implants
In the case of multiple tooth replacement, abutments are first attached to all the implants, followed by crowns and bridges as needed. Implants can also be used to secure full dentures in place to prevent unwanted movement.
Dental implants have made a huge difference in the lives of many people, allowing them to eat, speak and smile with confidence, knowing that their restorations are functional, aesthetic and completely secure.
